WordPress 2.3.2 was released recently and after upgrading FRESH01 I decided to write a post on how to upgrade WordPress.
I feel it is important to always keep your WordPress blog up to date with the most recent version of the software. Not only do the updates include crucial security and other bug fixes, it also ensures that your blog will be compatible with all the newest plugins and themes.
I am aware that there are instructions for upgrading your blog on the WordPress site, but I want to release my own instructions. So here goes.
- Backup your database. (Not necessary, but good practice just in case something goes wrong…)
- Download the latest WordPress here.
- Extract the contents of the folder you just downloaded (Usually named “wordpress.x.x.x” - x being the version number).
- Open the extracted WordPress folder (Usually named “wordpress”).
- Delete the wp-config-sample.php file.
- Open the the wp-content folder.
- Delete the plugins and theme folders (if you do not do this you will overwrite and loose all your current themes and plugins)
- Now you need to open your FTP software and connect to your server.
- Select everything in the new WordPress folder, and copy these files over your existing WordPress installation.
- Open your blog in a browser. Navigate to http://www.yoursite.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php (if WordPress is in the root folder of your server, go to http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php) and follow the on-screen instructions.
And there you have it. Ten simple steps to upgrading your WordPress blog. If you require more detailed instructions, try this. Happy blogging.
