Default Free Theme Features

Posted on July 14, 2008 in WordPress

These features are included by default with all my free WordPress themes, unless stated otherwise. All theme-specific additional features will be listed with the themes. *Please note that the features listed here are additional to the basic stuff, like content ul, image and comments styling. I feel that those should be standard and pretty much a given with any theme, so I won’t list them here.

Basic Features

  • Grid based design and layout, built on the popular 960.gs css framework
  • Extensive stylesheet with declarations for all areas of the theme
  • Easy to customise/expand
  • Widgetized sidebar with styling for all default WordPress widgets
  • Fully supports WordPress’s gallery feature
  • 100% Valid XHTML and CSS

Content Features

Custom paragraph styles

  • download
  • info
  • update
  • warning

To use custom paragraph styles, add ‘class=”style_name”‘ to any paragraph via the code tab on the WordPress WYSIWYG. Example here.

Pull quotes

Pull quotes are used to highlight pieces of body text. To use pullquotes, wrap the text you want to pull in blockquote tags. Add ‘class=”pullquote_left”‘ or ‘class=”pullquote_right”‘ to float the quote left or right. Example here

Table styling

Adding ‘class=”altrow”‘ to every other row of a table will give you alternate colored table rows. Example here.

Page Templates

  • Archives
  • Sitemap

To use these templates:

  1. Create a new WordPress page.
  2. In the page template box, select either Archives or Sitemap

Supported Plugins

These plugins are supported and styled by default. All you need to do is install and activate the plugins. These plugins are not required, so the theme will work fine without them. For further setup notes, see the readme.txt file included with the theme.

Compatibility

Tested in latest versions of the following browsers on Windows Vista:

  • Firefox
  • Opera
  • Safari
  • Internet Explorer 7
  • Internet Explorer 6 (WinXP) PLEASE NOTE: I no longer support Internet Explorer 6 for my Free WordPress Themes

Tested on WordPress 2.5 and newer.

This is beautiful. It is a clean layout and has all the basic features one needs. Not to be too selective, but could you provide a stylesheet that would make this dark in color and provide the css file as an alternate to download to the white base? I think a dark version using the same colors as -http://www.vostoktheme.com/ would be perfect.

Also, how difficult would it be to move the menu to the other side of the page? I’m sure these would be a quick and easy mods for you, can you offer an alternate stylesheet with the few suggested changes?

Thank you. As for Travis (comment above) you can do it easily by playing the css file (change background, fornt colour etc).

I have to say this is a great theme. Very clean and easy to customize. Also the custom paragraph styles are a nice touch.

    Keep the good work

: Thanks for providing the images! Now i know exactly what you mean! :)

The font used in images 1-3 is Boopee.

The font in image 4 is Times New Yorker, which is basically a “grunge” version of Times New Roman.

Hope that helps, thanks for taking interest in the design of the theme! :)

Hi, I’m intending to use your theme for my blog, but I want the content area to be larger, at least about 850px wide for my images. Could you tell me how should I edit the CSS to make it wider? I’ve tried doing it myself, but I end up messing the sidebar position.

The only thing confusing is the grid layout. I can’t seem to wrap my head around how it works. :( I was going to use this as a “Base” but now I’m not so sure…the grid seems limiting me to certain widths for everythng.

    Hi!

    Thanks for your amazing work!
I would like to use this theme, but would need to adapt the background colour. Any chance you could supply the source images? especially header.jpg?

    Cheers,

    Hello,
When you talk about a Theme options page for inserting and position a logo where and how is this used? I have been unable to find an options page for inserting and positioning a logo. Thanks for a great theme, I have been using it for some time now and am very pleased with it.

I want to insert my Logo on that design but I can`t get it!
Is there a trick? I uploaded it to the img folder, inserted it in the “options” … are there any files that must be writeable (777) on the server o.s.l.t.?
Can anyone give me a clue because I want this theme on my website ;-)
    Thanx in advance!
